A beginner-friendly comparison of when to start with Poke and when OpenClaw or Hermes may fit better.

I would start with Poke when the same small job keeps coming back. OpenClaw or Hermes makes more sense once the job has proved it is worth owning and maintaining.

## Poke

Best when the job is useful but does not deserve a custom setup yet: family briefings, email alerts, content ideas, meeting prep, or creator support.

- Good first test when you do not want to manage setup.
- Recipe pages can show access, limits, and first prompts before you install anything.
- Works best when the source material already lives in the apps you use every day.

## OpenClaw

Better when you want a local agent with its own rules and memory, and you are willing to maintain it.

- More room for a custom identity and your own local workflows.
- More setup before a busy parent or teacher gets value.
- Useful once the workflow has earned the maintenance.

## Hermes

Better for scheduled background work when you already know the job well enough to name its schedule and what failure looks like.

- Can be strong for scheduled follow-up or alerts.
- Usually asks more from the person running it.
- Not where I would start for family logistics.

## When Poke is the better first test

I would choose Poke first when the job sounds like something you would ask a reliable assistant to do: read the family calendar, summarize the day, watch for important email, help with a creator project, or turn messy notes into the next thing to try.

I would reach for OpenClaw or Hermes after the job has proved it deserves the setup.
