Using ChatGPT to Do Every Assignment I Gave My Students
May 08, 2024What if I told you that you could use AI tools to gain an ethical advantage in your learning? Not just for one or two assignments, but for an entire semester, guided by a professor who knows how to use them well. That's what I did, and I challenge you to join me in rethinking how we approach college.
Over the past year, a lot of students have discovered that apps like ChatGPT or other free AI tools can generate answers, essays, or even help them "cheat." But is that the only way to use them? Definitely not. Imagine harnessing AI to crush assignments, write creative essays, and find novel solutions.
I first stumbled across ChatGPT in November 2022 via TikTok (of course). I signed up for an OpenAI account and wondered, "Can this tool really transform how I teach and my students learn?"
That's when I had a crazy idea: At the start of the new semester, I'd give myself the same assignments as my students, but with one catch—I could only use ChatGPT to complete them. Notes, essays, reflections—all graded on the same rubric as my students' work but fully generated using AI.
The other twist? I'd use ChatGPT to grade my work using the same rubric and give myself feedback.
By the second month, it was obvious: AI is going to change everything. My lightbulb moment came when I stood in front of my Advanced World History class as King Louis XVI on trial for treason. I hit play on Drake's "God's Plan" and delivered a closing argument like I was Drake himself. The students were floored. How had I come up with this? With the help of ChatGPT, of course.
"So here before you, my defense I lay,
Under God's watchful eye, I've led the way.
Bad things, it's a lot of bad things, they claim I've done,
But under God's plan, I shine like the sun."
In just a minute, I had four verses like this one. I never could have written it without ChatGPT.
This whole experiment taught me a few things: vague prompts lead to vague answers, but clear instructions and good feedback let AI shine. So, if you want to be in a classroom where AI is used creatively and ethically, try it for yourself. Use AI to boost productivity, write killer essays, and unlock your creative potential.
If you're ready to crush it with AI, leave a comment below and tag a friend who would love this approach. My mission is to help college students learn to use AI tools to raise their grades and lower their stress without cheating!
